Their green upper tail coverts hide their tail and males are particularly spectacular, being much longer than the rest of the body. The primary feather coverts are also unusually long and give a ruffled appearance. Males have a helmet-like crest. The bill, which is partially covered by thin green feathers, is yellow in mature males and black in females. Their iridescent feathers, which make them appear glossy and green like canopy leaves, are a camouflaging adaptation to hide within the canopy during the rainy season. The quagga is the recently extinct zebra. It was one of six subspecies of the plains zebra. It was a yellow-brown zebra with stripes only on its head, neck and forelimbs, and it looked similar to an okapi. The quagga was native to the dry grasslands in the south of the African continent. Quagga were hunted for food, for their skin and also because farmers did not want them to eat the grass needed for their sheep and goats. The last wild quagga died in 1878 during a drought. The last captive quagga died at the Amsterdam Zoo on 12 August 1883. A foundation in Africa is trying to bring back quagus by taking zebras that have very light stripes and breeding them. They started in 1987 and in 2005 the first quagga calf was born.
