My kids love blowing bubbles, so we had to try this giant bubble mix. The giant bubble stick was made from a bubble stick we found at the toy store and the bubble solution recipe is one of our favorites.
How to Make Big Homemade Bubbles
Let’s start with the giant bubble wand! What makes it so effective is that the bubble solution has a lot of surface area to adhere to and the air does the rest. I love that even though this item is roomy when making big bubbles, it takes up very little space in a playroom or garage.

DIY Giant Bubble Stick
PVC pipe can be easily found at your local home improvement store, hardware store, or online. I love making toys out of PVC pipe because it’s like a great building to make your own homemade bubble wand and each kid can have their own bubble wand just the way they like them!
Supplies needed for each bubble wand
Instructions for Making a Giant Bubble Stick for Large Bubbles

Slide the PVC connector onto the pipe and add caps to each end. The caps will help keep the end of the dowel (your PVC pipe) solid.

Tie one end of the yarn to the top of the pipe, then string the washer onto the yarn and thread it through the connector.

Bring the thread back to the top of the pipe and tie it off to form a long triangle.
Sliding bubble wand mechanism makes giant bubble wand work
The PVC connector will slide up to the top of the wand when placed in the bubble solution, then you can gently pull it down to open the wand. Once the bubble has formed, slide the connector back on the top of the stick to release the bubble.

Time before the bubble bursts and of course, BIG!

Mix together the ingredients for the soap bubbles in a large bucket and let sit for at least one hour.
The longer it sits, the better. What an easy bubble solution to make!
Let’s make giant bubbles!
Each child will dip their own bubble stick into a container of bubble solution, then slide out the connectors to form a triangle. Watch the big bubbles form!
It’s so much fun to watch the big bubble kids make their own giant bubbles. It was really a fun activity in which the kids spent a lot of time playing in the backyard and making tons of bubbles with a simple bubble recipe.
Better bubbles come in slightly different shapes when made by cotton string. Little ones will need a little help with coordination to make the big hoop at first, but soon they’ll be making big bubbles too! A little breeze is helpful, but for best results a windy day isn’t your idea of a bucket list activity this summer!

How can I make big bubbles that don’t pop?
To make large bubbles that don’t pop, you’ll need a bubble solution that’s made with a strong soap and a thickening agent such as glycerin, corn syrup, or in the case of our Homemade Bubble Solution, corn starch. The batter should be mixed according to a homemade bubble recipe and then allowed to sit for at least a few hours or overnight so that the ingredients are fully combined and the batter thickens.
Can you make big bubbles with dish soap?
Dish soap can be the main ingredient of your homemade bubble solution to make bigger bubbles, but you’ll need a thickening agent to make sure the bubbles can get bigger!
What makes bubbles bigger?
There are a few factors that allow the bubble to grow beyond the size of your original soap bubble:
- Strength of Soap: The strength of your dish soap is the biggest factor in allowing it to form large bubbles. A stronger soap forms a stable film around the bubble making it last longer and more resistant to bursting.
- thickening agent: Your bubble solution must have some sort of thickener to allow for the formation of large bubbles. Common thickening ingredients for homemade bubble solution include: glycerin, corn syrup, or corn starch.
- surface tension: The surface tension of your homemade bubble solution can affect the size of the bubbles. A higher surface tension allows for a larger bubble because the film around that bubble is stronger.
- Blowing Technique: To make bigger bubbles, try blowing slowly and steadily instead of fast and furious. Your bubble blowing technique can change the shape of your bubble!
We had so much fun making these big bubbles and it was a great way to play outside together. My kids call bubble solution Fairy Liquid!
