This October is Disney’s 100th anniversary. In 1923, brothers Walt and Roy O. Disney created the Disney Brothers Studio to house Walt’s live-action shorts and a home for the animations he was creating. And the rest, as they say, is history.
In the year that’s followed, the company has become synonymous with pop culture, and a big part of that—in addition to the many television shows and movies the animation and live-action studios have produced throughout the decades—is because of the songs, which span generations. Most are recognized and well liked.
Ahead of the release of the live action version of The Little Mermaid – which stars Halle Bailey as the titular character and features new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda – Board The staff ranks Disney’s worldwide best 100 songs from Disney Channel Original Movies, live-action films, television shows and more. (Excluded from the list are pre-existing songs commonly associated with Disney’s works and songs written for properties later acquired by Disney.)
